À l’heure de la mondialisation de l’art contemporain, les territoires africains ont témoigné depuis plus de vingt ans de leur vitalité à en intégrer les circuits (exposition, production, collection, valorisation). Mais qu’en est-il en revanche du design… Au vu des publications, on gagera que la présence d’historiens européens de la discipline nous aidera à défricher ce domaine encore peu étudié en France. Domaine d’autant plus passionnant que les thématiques qu’il traverse sont d’actualité pour le design comme discipline : relations entre fabrique industrielles et pratiques artisanales, identité nationale pratiques artisanales locales et design, intersections entre motifs décoratifs anciens et inventions formelles, histoire de la colonisation et histoire de l’industrialisation, revalorisation des métiers d’arts et des pratiques décoratives, logique des transferts etc.

 

At a time of globalization of contemporary art, for more than twenty years African territories have shown their vitality by integrating its circuits (exhibition, production, collection, development). But, what about design… In view of the publications, we can be sure that the presence of European historians of the discipline will help us to open up this field, which is still little studied in France. This field is all the more fascinating as the themes it covers are of current interest for design as a discipline: relations between industrial manufacturing and craft practices, national identity, local craft practices and design, intersections between ancient decorative motifs and formal inventions, the history of colonisation and the history of industrialisation, the revaluation of artistic professions and decorative practices, the logic of transfers etc.

Elle sera suivie, sous réserves, de deux autres demies journées thématiques également distribuées entre intervenants académiques et designers ou commissaires d’exposition : la question d’un design non-européen (Allison Clarke, David Enon, Laureline Galliot, Catherine Geel, Alain Lardet) ; le cadre et le musée, ou le musée comme espace postcolonial opéré par le design (Dagara Dakin, Adrien Gardère, Emilie Goudal, Riasoon Naidoo, Marie Muracciole, Zahia Rahmani).

 

It will be followed, subject to reservations, by two other thematic half-days also distributed between academic speakers and designers or curators: the question of non-European design (Allison Clarke, David Enon, Laureline Galliot, Catherine Geel, Alain Lardet); the setting and the museum, or the museum as a postcolonial space operated by design (Dagara Dakin, Adrien Gardère, Emilie Goudal, Riasoon Naidoo, Marie Muracciole, Zahia Rahmani).
